We are visiting the San Joaquin Landfill, owned and managed by UC Irvine. It is adjacent to the marsh and utilized by species moving between upland and marshland areas. In coordination with the manager and campus planning, there are plans for restoration of the landfill, but little is known about the tolerances of native plants to the novel soil conditions of the landfill. We visited the landfill to measure plant growth and survival of pilot plantings done earlier in the year by staff.
