Santa Cruz Island Reserve

24 Jul, 10 AM - 30 Jul, 04 PM

Using predator model experiments, we will assess behavioral and vocal responses of the Island Scrub-Jay to simulated threats. Our models will consist of painted foam bird models mounted on dull arrows, which can be launched via slingshot above the target birds. In our trials, we will record and quantify behavioral responses after introducing the predator models. We will measure behaviors such as auditory alarm calls and fleeing, using video and spectrogram analysis to compare responses across predator types, species, season, and other important factors that may emerge.
