Sample collection will entail hiking through Bishop pine stands on fireroads, trails, and wilderness area within 100 feet of active roads. Through this process, we will identify and collect Suillus pungens sporocarp tissue. We aim to collect 3-5 sporocarps per collection, where a collection is defined as a cluster of sporocarps collected within a 5 meter distance from one another. At a maximum, we will collect no more than 50 sprorocarp samples. One representative sporocarp from each collection will be destroyed during analysis, while the remaining representatives from each collection will be deposited to The University and Jepson Herbaria at the University of
California, Berkeley. We will also collect pine cones at each site from Bishop Pine trees. No more than 200 pine cones will be collected.
