Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center

11 Apr, 03 PM - 15 Apr, 12 PM

We plan to do surveys for bumble bees and Mojave Poppy Bee (MPB) in and around Mojave NP for 4 days. We are following a standardized protocol for non-lethal bumble bee surveys found on our website https://www.cabumblebeeatlas.org/point-surveys.html. Surveys will be 45 minutes each, catching with nets and vialing, chilling in handheld coolers, photographing and releasing bees at the same site within 90 minutes. In addition, we will do a rapid habitat survey of all flowering plants in the areas we survey. Surveys for MPB will consist of setting out 3-colored passive collection pan traps filled with soapy water in transects of 200m for 4-6 hours in the morning. Traps will be collected after noon and bees specimens will be sorted into alcohol packs. Aerial netting surveys will be haphazard surveys where blooming host plants are located, either Argemone or Acrtomecon poppies. All small bees will be caught, if any Perdita are identified, only males will be collected (up to 20 per site) into coolers with ice, all others released. MPB cannot be identified to species in the field. In addition, we will do rapid habitat surveys of all flowering poppies in the areas we survey.
