Rules and Regulations

Rules for any type of use at the Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (GMDRC)
“Facilities” refer to the entire Granite Cove area, Norris Camp, and Yucca Bajada.
  1. All visitors must obtain pre-approval through RAMS before entering reserve. 
  2. All activities (experiments, class activities, hiking on/off trails) must be approved by the  GMDRC Director.  Access to areas outside the immediate surroundings of the facility you are staying at requires approval by the Director.   
  3. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (aka Drones) are not allowed unless a prior flight approval from the UC Center of Excellence on UAS Safety has been approved.  Drones are not allowed on the surrounding NPS lands. 
  4. Always lock gates as you enter or leave the reserve. Only share lock combinations with persons who need to know. 
  5. All individuals not employed (full-time) by the University of California must sign a Waiver of Liability before entering the GMDRC and give it to GMDRC staff. 
  6. Do not remove, collect, prune, or disturb plants, animals, cultural artifacts, or any natural material without prior consent of the GMDRC Director.  
  7. Park vehicles in designated areas only and do not drive off established roads. Only use established turn-arounds. 
  8. Walk only on designated trails or roads; do not walk off trail unless permitted by GMDRC staff.  
  9. Outhouses and bathrooms are to be used unless you are more than one mile from any facility. If you are not near a facility, please bury all human waste and carry out any toilet paper. Please do not dig “cat-holes” near any of the facilities.  
  10. Do not bring firearms onto the reserve, or use firearms within the designated "Safety Zones" surrounding the reserve. 
  11. No pets are allowed on the reserve.  Service animals are allowed. 
  12. Do not engage in recreational use of the land, including but not limited to: rock climbing, hunting, bicycling, and rock collecting.  
  13. Campfires are not permitted. 
  14. Smoking or vaping is not allowed on any UC lands or near facilities. 
  15. Speed limit is 10mph once inside reserve boundaries.
  16. Facilities must be left clean. All trash must be taken with you or placed in the trash receptacle in Granite Cove. 
  17. It is your responsibility to know and obey the rules of the GMDRC as well as any Federal, State, or local laws that may apply to your activities.
