For this project, Dr. Whites student-centered research team is conducting SCUBA-based population surveys in kelp forests across Kellets whelks range before, during and after the 2015-16 El Niño and testing for enhanced larval recruitment at the poleward margin of the species range in association with the El Niño event. The team also is collecting tissue samples for mapping connections -- and thus dependencies -- among reefs by matching recruits with their parent populations using molecular techniques
