We will take a closer look at the understudied response to fire severity by coastal redwoods in the southernmost part of their range. Specifically, we are studying how basal sprouting as a post-fire response correlates to fire severity. We conducted a preliminary study in July 2016 on the UC Natural Reserve Big Creek with the California Ecology and Conservation course and would like to expand our findings to areas near the reserve.
