We are a small group of PhD and DMA students in the music department at UC Santa Cruz interested in using portable ambisonic microphones to record the sounds of the Big Sur coast. These high-fidelity audio recordings will serve to document the soundscapes of this unique region and provide materials and inspiration for musical projects that highlight the sonic character of Big Sur through original compositions and creative works. We plan to explore the reserve on foot in search of interesting sonic environments and make extended audio recordings using three separate microphones. By strategically orienting ourselves with these three high-fidelity microphones we will capture spatially complex sonic representations of these natural environments.
