I intend to visit the Hastings Natural History Reservation for a one-week solo writing retreat to begin planning my third book, Refugee California. The project is a historical monograph focusing on Middle Eastern refugees who resettled in California between 1915-1950. The book traces the complex journeys of Armenian, Assyrian, and Arab refugees, exploring their displacement experiences shaped by ethnic cleansing, European colonialism, and partition in their homelands. I argue that refugee resettlement was shaped jointly by American immigration policies and Middle Eastern state building. This research takes an explicit interethnic framework, highlighting solidarity and struggles among refugee ethnic communities. This reservation will be my opportunity to pivot from Summer archival research (conducted in San Bruno, Fresno, Turlock, and Los Angeles) toward writing; I would like to use a cabin in the reserve to focus on development of my notes into a book plan. The research is funded by a UC Davis internal grant; I would only require housing accommodation (with a kitchen and internet) and envision working there, perhaps with visits on grounds or nearby as permitted by the reservation. This is my first time applying to do work in the reserve system; I've heard quite a bit about the scientific observation and research that takes place in the reserve system, and a little about social scientists and humanists working within them. I would very much like to visit! Thank you for considering.
