Rules and Regulations

The Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve is open to qualified users. All use must be consistent with University objectives of education and research. With the exception of the Stunt High Trail, the Reserve is not open to the public for recreational uses such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, picnicking, or rock climbing.


ONGOING RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES.
Permission to use the Reserve may be withdrawn or denied if any rules and regulations are violated. The University retains the right to add or modify the Reserve Rules at any time.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

1) The individual(s) that initiated the RAMS reservation is/are responsible for the behavior of their group.

2) Keep noise and all lighting to an absolute minimum. No outdoor lighting may be used after dusk, with the exception of headlamps and/or flashlights. No audio may be played from speakers at any time, without the consent of the Reserve Director.
Also, please do not carry on loud conversations or create any loud noise or disturbances at any time. There are researchers collecting bird vocalization data and there are residents in the canyon. Please respect them and be quiet.

3) When entering and exiting the Reserve, vehicles must not exceed 5 MPH. Take extreme caution when driving to avoid hitting animals that are often on or crossing the driveway.

4) Vehicles may park in designated areas only. These areas are directly in front of the facility and further down the road in front of the pavilion. DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE ELSE, especially in FIRE DEPARTMENT ZONES. 

5) Absolutely NO SMOKING and FIRES of any kind are not permitted on the Reserve property. 

6) Pets, including dogs, cats, and, horses are not permitted on the reserve. This includes during community events. While dogs and horse are permitted on the public trails that cross the reserve (Lower Stunt High trail & Cold Creek trail), they are not allowed in or around the reserves main field station as their presence can significantly disrupt ecological research.  

7) Reserve users shall not in any way alter the property.

8) Firearms are not allowed on the reserve.

9) Care should be given not to enter marked research plots.

10) Leave the entrance gate as you found it (e.g. if closed and locked, close and lock it after passing).

FOR RESEARCHERS ONLY:

1) All onsite research should be initiated only after a written application has been approved through the RAMS online system, and must be renewed annually.

2) All tags or flagging must be coordinated with Stunt Ranch staff and removed at the conclusion of the project.

3) Results of studies are expected to be incorporated into the Reserve database. Confidentiality of the data can be arranged. Written materials that result from work conducted at Stunt Ranch Reservde must acknowledge the UC NRS Santa Monica Mountains Reserve.


Directions

Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve is located between Topanga Canyon and Malibu Canyon, and between the cities of Malibu and Calabasas. It is roughly 26 miles from UCLA by road, about a 30-minute drive. (mileage below is approximate)

To reach Stunt Ranch FROM WEST LOS ANGELES

a) Take the Santa Monica freeway (10) south to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH); go west on PCH
(toward Malibu); turn right on Topanga Canyon Blvd 4.4 miles to Old Topanga Road (just
beyond the Post Office in the center of the town); turn left on Old Topanga Road 5.7 miles to
Mulholland Highway; turn left at Mulholland Highway 3.6 miles to Stunt Road.; turn left at
Stunt Road approximately 1.8 miles to 1201 Stunt Road. There is a redwood sign identifying the
Stunt Ranch Reserve in the parking area next to the gate.

b) Take the San Diego Freeway (405) north to the Ventura Freeway (101); go west on the 101
(towards Ventura) to the Mulholland Drive/Valley Circle exit (several exits past Topanga
Canyon); at the exit, turn left (south) on Valley Circle crossing over the freeway; on the other
side of the freeway, the street name changes to Mulholland Drive. Go past the shopping center
(on the left) .6 miles to Valmar; turn right on Valmar. This street name changes into Old
Topanga Cyn. Road. Take that 1.1 miles to Mulholland Highway; turn right on Mulholland
Highway 3.9 miles to Stunt Road. Turn left at Stunt Road approximately 1.8 miles to 1201 Stunt
Road. There is a redwood sign identifying the Stunt Ranch Reserve in the paved parking area
next to the entrance gate.

To reach Stunt Ranch FROM THE VENTURA/THOUSAND OAKS AREA

a) Take the Pacific Coast Highway (1) east to Malibu Canyon Road; turn left and take Malibu
Canyon Road approximately 6 miles to Mulholland Highway (street light); turn right onto
Mulholland 4 miles to Stunt Road; turn right on Stunt Road approximately 1.8 miles to 1201
Stunt Road. There is a redwood sign identifying the Stunt Ranch Reserve in the paved parking
area next to the entrance gate.

b) Take the Ventura Freeway (101) east to Las Virgenes Canyon Road exit; turn right and take
Las Virgenes south 2.9 miles to Mulholland Highway (street light); turn left and follow
Mulholland 4 miles to Stunt Road; turn right onto Stunt approximately 1.8 miles to 1201 Stunt
Road. There is a carved redwood sign identifying the Stunt Ranch Reserve in the paved parking
area next to the entrance gate.
