We hope to expose our new cohort of UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars to various field techniques so they know what it's like to be part of a field crew. For example how to collect data of phenological synchrony in quercus lobata, how to use a compass, basic orienteering, best practice hiking techniques, etc. We will take a hike to visit some of the oaks in the area and collect data, as well as set up a scavenger hunt that will teach them orienteering.
