Rules and Regulations
Thanks for reaching out to Sedgwick Reserve!
We require a minimum of THREE BUSINESS DAYS (M-F) to review your reservation request, and TWO WEEKS to review a research application. Please do NOT come to the Reserve without receiving approval via RAMS that we have accepted your reservation request.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Access to the Sedgwick Reserve is by on-line RAMS application or advance arrangement with the Reserve Director. The Reserve is generally closed on Sunday. It is open to visitors by reservation --please see our website for topics and registration.
GENERAL RULES
1. Except for the improved main road from the Brinkerhoff gate to the Field Station, Reserve roads are closed during periods of high fire danger or heavy rain. Check with the Reserve Director prior to a scheduled trip for road condition advisories and possible restrictions on vehicle travel.
2. 4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicles are recommended for travel on all roads except the Lisque Creek Road and the lower Figueroa Creek Road, which are passable in a passenger car under most conditions. Vehicles must stay on established roadways and vehicle trails. Off-road vehicle travel is prohibited.
3. Smoking is prohibited on the reserve.
4. Dogs are prohibited on the reserve.
5. All firearms are prohibited on any University of California property of the Regents of UC at any time, pursuant to the California Penal Code, Sections 629.9 (h) and 629.9 (i).

PRECAUTIONS DURING FIRE SEASON: Since fire is a significant danger at the Sedgwick Reserve, several precautions need to be taken during the fire season, April through November. A shovel, fire extinguisher and cell phone must be carried in each vehicle during the fire season (April through November). Before driving on the reserve roads each day, inspect your exhaust system to insure it is free of debris. The catalytic converter in particular can ignite seed heads and other debris trapped on the exhaust pipes leading to a grass fire. Do not drive or park vehicles off the road unless you have specific permission of the Reserve Director. During periods of extreme fire danger gates at the lower end of Lisque and by the studio will be closed and locked to prevent vehicle traffic to the reserve. Please respect these closures.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: Because Sedgwick Reserve is a wildland environment located some distance from urban facilities, precautions for potential hazards should be taken, similar to those for a backcountry hike. The nearest medical facility is the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, 700 Alamo Pintado Road, Solvang (688-6431). In the event of an emergency call 911 immediately and notify reserve staff. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, the following: •RATTLESNAKES Wear long pants, hiking boots, and use caution when hiking over rocks, logs, or in tall grass. If bitten, contact 911 immediately and keep patient calm. POISON OAK. A common shrub or vine in riparian areas and shaded north-facing slopes. Easily avoided. 2. •TICKS. Ticks in Santa Barbara County may carry Lyme disease. Routine body-checks for ticks are advised. If bitten, store tick in alcohol, monitor symptoms and consult with a physician if area becomes inflamed. •3. MOUNTAIN LIONS. Avoid hiking alone, make noise and, if confronted, make your self look as large as possible, throw things, and yell. Do not run. 4. RUGGED TERRAIN. Downed logs, unstable rocks, steep slopes, cliffs, ground squirrel holes, steep and narrow roads, and many other potential hazards exist on the reserve. Use caution and good judgment. It is recommended that researchers work in teams. Solo hiking is strongly discouraged.
