Sample 5-10 individuals of snowplant (Sarcodes sanguinea) for C and N stable isotope analysis to investigate the overlap of the plant and its ectomycorrhizal symbiont in isotopic niche space. This is part of a larger research project investigating nutrient sharing within obligate and facultative symbioses across diverse lifeforms (e.g. marine invertebrates, lichens and plants that form symbioses with mycorrhizal fungi).
I will only sample an individual is there are other stalks present within ~10m to ensure I am not removing a newly-established patch of S. sanguinea. I will also sample non-destructively where possible, taking a couple of bracts/flowers and a portion of the root mass for stable isotope analysis.
