CALeDNA: A Biomonitoring Solution: To address this urgent need, we have assembled a network of collaborators across the UC system and built the CALeDNA program. The primary goal of CALeDNA is to systematically monitor total biodiversity using eDNA from soil, sediment and water samples for terrestrial and aquatic environments. This program harnesses UC faculty, undergraduates, graduate students and community scientists to collect and analyze samples that are then permanently archived in a frozen repository at UCLA and UCSC. We have effectively used these samples to map biodiversity in California and in habitats affected by various degrees of human activity such as high and low intensity agriculture and undeveloped and developed urban spaces.
