We are a transdisciplinary* research network across the UC system named MIR and funded by the UC Humanities Research Institute as well as faculty research funds. This will be our first annual summer seminar, where UC and guest faculty offer seminars for 25 UC graduate students selected from across the campuses and disciplines. We will have three daily sessions: graduate student presentations, a seminar on historical materialist pedagogy, and a running (four-day) seminar on economics for materialist scholars. Our theme this year, in coordination with the UCHRI, is "Marxism in Transition," looking at the problem of historical transition with particular attention to economic and environmental crisis. * the form compelled us to select a single discipline; our core faculty are from at least five departments across the Humanities and Social Sciences. I ended up simply listing my own home department for simplicity's sake. We will not, despite that, be devoting ourselves to the study of literature.
