Volunteers will navigate independently or in teams through areas of the park within assigned areas (Giant Sequoia Groves & campgrounds), identify trees, take measurements, record data on tablets, and treat high value Sugar Pines, a species susceptible to Mountain Pine Beetle, and may carry a backpack up to 30 lbs as directed. Work will involve:• Doing a loose pattern grid in assigned areas, following maps (off trail, in difficult terrain and sometimes uncomfortable conditions such as exposure to extreme temperatures, insects)• Identify various conifers such as Sugar Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Ponderosa Pine, white fir and Douglas-fir and ability to differentiate species. Training will be provided.• Surveyors will be responsible for reading all materials related to SPLAT/Verbenone, Safety Data sheets provided, and following all precautions and safety instructions as well as understanding or asking questions related to the proper use of this registered Pesticide. This mild anti-aggregate synthetic pheromone paste will be applied with pre-calibrated caulking guns on tree trunks at approximately 6' from base of trees.• Surveyors will follow all directions in the use, handling, care, application and clean-up of the SPLAT guns, forestry tools, tablets and equipment and turn in at the end of work periods in good working condition.
