While at the reserve, our working group will use the lodging and meeting spaces to plan an extensive speaker series to take place during the 2022-2023 academic year, which we proposed to the University of California Humanities Research Institute and received a grant to accomplish. This series is on Alt-Right Media Literacy, and this weekend at Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego will allow all of our working group members from different UC campuses to meet in one place to curate our speaker panels, establish a network of scholars we’d like to invite to the series, and have discussions as to the political commitments of our group and how we’d like to articulate them in a special issue of a UC Santa Barbara-based journal. In short, gathering at the reserve will allow us to meet in person, which we haven’t been able to do previously, and will be crucial to our collaborative planning of the year-long speaker series.
