The primary purpose of our visit to the UC Irvine Ecological Preserve is to provide UCHRI Climate Action Summer Fellows with an immersive, on-the-ground experience that enriches their understanding of the ecological and cultural significance of the Southern California landscape while also learning more about collaborative work within the WUICAN network. Participants will be engaging in a week-long Summer Institute August 11-16, and the nature walk will create space for fellows to learn about the history of land management and UCI Nature’s ecological research and will allow them to decompress and process after the week’s activities. During the nature walk, participants will explore the Preserve's ecosystems, including its coastal sage scrub and grasslands. They will gain insight into the native plant and animal species that inhabit these spaces and their roles in maintaining ecological balance and resilience in the face of climate change. The walk will also offer an opportunity to discuss the broader impacts of land development and urbanization on these fragile ecosystems and the importance of preserving and restoring such areas, centering the work of WUICAN partners focused on conservation and native plant restoration. In addition to ecological learning, the walk will provide a platform for fellows to reflect on the connections between land stewardship, cultural heritage, and climate justice as explored through the WUICAN network. Discussions will touch on the historical and ongoing stewardship practices in the region, including the influence of community and Indigenous land management and the role of UCI Nature in promoting ecological research and climate education. This immersive experience aims to deepen the fellows’ knowledge of local ecology and inspire innovative approaches to climate communication, informed by a deep respect for the land and its history. By grounding their work in the specificities of the Southern California landscape, fellows will be better positioned to create impactful, contextually relevant communication pieces that resonate with diverse audiences.
