Scripps Coastal Reserve

For SIO295S & SIO295LS in Summer 2024, the course theme is 30x30. Students will get to experience a multitude of coastal and marine protected areas around the San Diego area with a varying degrees of protection, access, economic impact, and socio-political conflict. The Scripps Coastal Reserve field trip will provide additional value and context. Students will explore the Knoll and learn about development and infrastructure pressures on preserve land, as well as along the coast to explore the biodiversity of the intertidal zone. Class visit with 29 graduate students to tour the area and learn about ecology, geology, carbon sequestration, and indigenous importance. Goals of this field trip are to introduce students to the UC Reserve System, coastal habitats, and ecological concepts related to the intertidal, as well as mixed land use.
