Scripps Coastal Reserve
28 Oct, 08 AM - 28 Oct, 11 AM
I will be teaching the course SYN 100: Urban Nature for the Synthesis Program. I would like to take my students to the Scripps Coastal Reserve on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. It would be great to introduce students to the Scripps Coastal Reserve and help them develop projects around the weekly Friday weeding and habitat restoration efforts.
Here is a draft of the SYN 100: Urban Nature course description:
What is the role of “urban nature” in complex socio-ecological systems? And who benefits from it? This SYN 100 section is a fieldwork-oriented course that prioritizes methods of data collection and community engagement to answer similar driving questions. Students are expected to meet for class on site at Rose Canyon Open Space Park (aka “Rose Canyon”) on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, and at the Scripps Coastal Reserve on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Students must sign group and liability waivers for both field trips. Collaborative group projects focus on methods of data collection and analysis, community engagement, and creative modes of climate change communication. One additional independent team trip to Rose Canyon, Scripps Coastal Reserve, or an instructor-approved site is required to fulfill fieldwork expectations. Collaborative groups may build upon previous SYN 100 projects or develop their own designs around urban nature.
